How Does My Name Get into the Book of Life?
by Silas Martin Bollweg on Sat Jun 20 2026
First of all, this is the most important question in every person’s life, because the alternative means spending eternity in the fires of hell! That’s why I find it incomprehensible when people aren’t interested in this and brush it off so carelessly. Once again: The most important thing in every person’s life is that their name is written in the Book of Life with God!
Let’s read Revelation 20, verses 11–15:
“And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:11-15)
As we can see, having our name recorded in God’s register is of the utmost importance, for it determines where each and every one of us will spend eternity!
Back to the original question: How does my name get into God’s register?
Do I have to “be a good person”? In principle, one should be a good person anyway!
Do I have to do good deeds? That, too, should be a matter of course for every person.
Do I have to keep the Ten Commandments? That would be desirable, but it’s not possible! I strongly recommend reading chapter 10 of the Epistle to the Hebrews!
Do I have to be a member of a church or a religious community? No, because religious people killed Jesus Christ! Even today, wars are waged in the name of various religions, bringing endless suffering upon people.
Do I have to be baptized? Conscious baptism as an adult is a public declaration of belonging to Jesus Christ. I believe that this is the minimum expression of belonging to the Lord Jesus. It is a sign of one’s serious commitment to walking the path with Jesus. However, it is not essential for salvation.
“Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; but whoever does not believe will be condemned.” (Mark 16:16)
The emphasis here is on “whoever believes.” Now it all comes down to what one believes! People say, “Believing doesn’t mean knowing”—I don’t even bother discussing something so primitive anymore.
My definition of believing means “believing in God”! To believe and understand what He has said in His Holy Word, and then to put it into practice to the best of one’s knowledge and conscience. Simply believing in “something higher” or in “the dear Lord” is by no means enough, because even the demons do that. They know it very well, in fact.
“Do you believe that there is only one God? That’s all well and good. But even the demons believe that—and tremble with fear.” (Mark 2:19)
“Whenever those possessed by unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, ‘You are the Son of God!’” (Mark 3:11)
Now we know which kind of faith isn’t enough, but how does my name get into God’s Book of Life? Answer: Through a relationship with Him—and only through that!
If you don’t have a relationship with Jesus Christ, you are lost for time and eternity—that is absolutely certain! This makes perfect sense, because who would want to be the “Bride of Christ” if they know Him only by hearsay at best? The phrase “Bride of Christ” speaks louder here than a thousand words. In the Book of Revelation, the “great wedding feast of the Lamb” is mentioned in connection with the Rapture. “The Bride has made herself ready.”(John 19:7–9)
All of us—and I mean every single one of us—must have a living relationship with our Creator and live in it. No one can do this for you, because it is a deeply personal matter. (John, Chapter 1)
When we personally invite Jesus Christ into our lives, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us, and we are “born again.”
“There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” (John 3:1-5)
“Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Whoever loves me will keep my word; and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.’” (John 14:23)
That is the key point!
When you invite Jesus Christ into your life and acknowledge him as Lord and God, you will be sealed with God’s Holy Spirit! It is God’s pledge to you. The image of the Holy Spirit as a “pledge” (or down payment) comes from the Bible (e.g., 2 Corinthians 1:22 and Ephesians 1:14).
In ancient commerce, a pledge was a kind of down payment or legal guarantee that sealed the certain completion of the rest of the transaction. The Holy Spirit within us is therefore God’s “down payment” on our eternal life and the divine guarantee that He will fulfill His promise to us 100%. He is our assurance that we are on the home stretch.
By the way, you can only understand the Word of God if the Holy Spirit reveals it to you; that’s why there are so many people who have studied theology and still don’t understand anything. That’s also why there are so many cults. Even Islam cannot understand the Bible and therefore claims it has been corrupted.
The truth is that no book in the world—not even AI—can hold a candle to the Bible! Throughout the ages of history, the Bible has proven itself to be absolutely superhuman through its more than 3,000 prophecies that were correctly foretold and later fulfilled, and through its cross-references within Scripture! And it is sealed by the Holy Spirit, meaning it can only be properly understood by those who belong to the spiritual kingdom of God. As already mentioned, this does not refer to a specific church denomination, but to the “worldwide spiritual church of Jesus Christ.” That is, everyone who has accepted Jesus Christ into their heart.
By the way, being a “born-again Christian” doesn’t mean you can no longer sin. As long as we live in the flesh, we are also subject to fleshly temptations. But we “grow” in the Spirit and are gradually transformed into better people.
The Bible puts it this way: “But we all, with unveiled faces, reflect the Lord’s glory. And the Lord, through his Spirit, transforms us so that we may become more and more like him and share more and more in his glory.”(2 Corinthians 3:18)
Everyone can test themselves on this: Do I love Jesus Christ? Have I invited Him into my life as Lord? Does it make me sad when people make mean jokes about Jesus? Do I have a constant spiritual connection with Him? Do I have an inner brake (the Holy Spirit) when I play with the idea of doing something wrong? These are indicators that help us recognize how close—or how far—we are from God.
If you don’t know Jesus Christ yet, pray to Him and ask Him for clarity. You can also pray “The Life-Changing Prayer” right here on this website, because that’s exactly why I wrote it.
May God bless you, Amen.
