Distraction from What Really Matters

The devil doesn’t necessarily have to convince you that heaven and hell aren’t real if he can keep your focus on everything that will never save your soul. He is content to have you chase after money, pleasure, fame, entertainment, success, religion, and other endless distractions, as long as you never come to the One who has accomplished the work of salvation.

Millions of people spend their entire lives preparing for retirement, their careers, vacations, and fleeting happiness, yet they never prepare for the moment when they will stand before a holy God! The greatest tragedy is not to die poor or unknown. The greatest tragedy is to die without believing in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

“Whoever believes in me (Jesus Christ) will not be judged; but whoever does not believe has already been judged.” (John 3:18)

The most alarming fact is that damnation for the unbeliever does not begin only after death. Scripture says that the unbeliever is already damned. Any distraction that keeps a person away from Jesus Christ obscures the understanding of the salvation that God has provided. Satan rejoices over every wasted day, for every wasted day is another day during which a soul remains under God’s judgment.

“Moreover, brothers and sisters, I proclaim to you the gospel: that Christ died for our sins, as the Scriptures say; that he was buried; and that he was raised on the third day, as the Scriptures say.” (1 Corinthians 15:1–4)

God does not offer many paths to salvation. He has given one complete Gospel. Jesus Christ shed His holy and perfectly sinless blood, thereby dying for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day. If the world distracts you too much to believe in this perfect work, then every earthly achievement becomes worthless the moment eternity begins.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves—it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians 2:8–9)

The distraction that replaces simple faith in Christ becomes a chain that keeps a sinner away from the Savior.

“How much more, then, since we have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from God’s wrath.” (Romans 5:9)

God’s wrath is real, but so is His mercy. The holy, perfect blood of Jesus Christ is sufficient to save forever everyone who believes. No sin is greater than the blood of Jesus. Only His blood justifies. Only His blood saves. Only His blood frees us from the coming eternal wrath.

“Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.” (Acts 16:31)

Notice the simplicity of God’s invitation. He does not say that you can earn your salvation.

Jesus says, “Just believe in me.”

While the world vies for your attention with countless voices, God gives a single, clear command that determines your eternal destiny. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness. Without the shedding of Christ’s holy, perfect blood, there is no forgiveness, no cleansing, no escape from judgment, and no hope beyond the grave. (Hebrews 9:22)

Any distraction that hides the cross from your sight leaves your sins unatoned for. But the moment you place your trust in the finished work of Jesus Christ, His blood is sufficient, His sacrifice is sufficient, and His resurrection is God’s eternal proof that the atonement for sin has been accepted.
